This story beats everything I’ve ever read/heard about friendship……

Horror gripped the heart of a World War-I soldier, as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. The soldier asked his Captain if he could go out to bring his fallen associate back.

“You can go,” said the Captain, “but don’t think it will be worth it.Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.”

The Captain ’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway. Miraculously, he managed to reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder and brought him back to their company’s trench.

The officer checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend. "I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded.”

“It was worth it, Sir,” said the soldier.

“What do you mean by worth it?” responded the Captain.”Your friend is dead.”

“Yes Sir,” the soldier answered, “but it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say…….

” Man…I knew you would come ! ”

  1. I think this has been one of your best posts.

The articles made for a good read. Yes, it is important to have a dream.

This nation... and indeed this world, still has several good samaritans. Unsung heros and heroines... who quietly go about helping others. Without selfish motives. They do not get awards or recognitions. No glitzy award nite functions, for them. They do not hand over stuff: blankets, computers, food, etc., under the full glare of the media and flashing camera bulbs.

Yet... they are the ones who make the much needed difference. Positive difference. It is 'coz of them... that this world is still functioning.

Sometimes I wonder... what really becomes of all the money, that goes into the ever mushrooming charity organisations, NGOs, shelter homes, social help organisations... all over the world, India included.

Their total budget... would easily surpass the GDP of all the nations combined. Yet, there has hardly been a visible difference. Having such an organisation or being a part of it... is a 'status symbol'. Surely and sadly.

I liked the story about friendship... you have narrated here. I may want to use it for one of my future posts. Will provide the link back. Let me know if it works well with you.

  2. Thanks Roshmi for your detailed and beautiful feedback. This comment has encouraged me lot. You are right about random act of kindness people do without hinking of rewards. When cause become greater than your life, some change will surely happen. People are greedy or selfless by nature. NGO's having good people serve people while bad NGO's loot the aid money. Lets not become cynical in criticism and help others. If you can't donate money, then give time. If you can't do anything, then atleast donate blood. That is priceless and can't be genrated, only shared. And regarding story feel free to use story without giving any reference. I violate each copyrights, IP right and other laws as long as it is for non profit, educational and awareness work. Have a nice day...
